Weeks after releasing “WE DON’T TRUST YOU,” Future and Metro Boomin are back to take over the hip-hop game again. Their first of two albums took the internet by storm and caused a lot of stir in the online community of rap fans. I really liked “WE DON’T TRUST YOU” and I am happy to say that “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU” is also another worthy album in Future and Metro Boomin’s discography. But with that said, I do not think it is as good as Future and Metro’s previous release.
This time around, Metro and Future do not include nearly as many feature artists. On “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU,” the voices of The Weeknd, J. Cole, Lil Baby, A$AP Rocky, and Ty Dolla $ign are featured. I think the only reason this list feels so much shorter is because the album is thirty minutes longer than the first. However, I think that the features that were included were great. My favorite by far is A$AP Rocky on “Show of Hands.” The back-and-forth flow between Future and Rocky on the track was really impressive. I was very surprised with the appearance of J. Cole on this album, as it seemed as though Cole was just being dissed on Future and Metro’s first album weeks ago. But, I think Cole gave a great performance and was a worthy addition to this album.
The production on “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU” was magnificent. Metro once again proves himself to be one of the best producers of this generation of rap with this album. The beats that Metro produced on “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU” were phenomenal. I genuinely enjoyed I think every single one. A few highlights to me were “Red Leather,” “Show of Hands,” and “Nobody Knows My Struggle.” The range that Metro can produce is just awe-striking. Metro can make trap/drill beats like “Like That,” but can also make beats like “Red Leather” which are really laid back and chill.
Something I was not expecting from this album was the tonal shift from the first album. “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU” is full of very R&B reminiscent rap with very chill flows and beats. Future gives more of a melodic rap on “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU” which is not new for Future. On 2017’s “HNDRXX,” Future also gave some R&B type performances. I do not think having R&B on the album is a negative in itself, but I think that because of this some of the songs just blend too much together to make them feel unique, but they just seem boring.
One of my favorite things about this album is that Future and Metro Boomin are back again dissing Drake. In their first album, they had Rick Ross and Kendrick Lamar on their side against Drake. This time around, the voices of The Weeknd and A$AP Rocky join in on the dissing. Then on April 20, Metro Boomin and Kanye West released a remix of the popular track “Like That” which also dissed Drake. I have loved the dissing because it has gotten so much drama and buzz going on in the hip-hop/rap scene. It is so fun to see everyone going at each other.
Future once again gave a great performance on “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU.” I really enjoyed Future’s dynamic range on this album that I do not think was seen as much as on “WE DON’T TRUST YOU.” Future’s voice is cool to listen to especially when he can do inflections and such that other artists can’t do nearly as well, if at all. I liked the lyrics and flows that Future delivered on “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU.”
This time around, we get a longer album that has a runtime that comes around one hour and thirty minutes. I personally thought that maybe this was just a bit too long because there were a lot of songs on this album that did not stick out. Some songs felt really bland, not to say they were outright bad, but just felt as though there was not anything unique about them for me to remember what song I was listening to after it was done.
Metro Boomin and Future have done it again with “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU,” which scores a 3/5 stars rating from me.
