The Ankeny Hawks started off the season with their cross-town rivalry game against the Centennial Jags on Friday, Aug. 30.
The game started with a first half showcasing a strong defense from both the Hawks and the Jags. The first points were scored on a Jaguar field goal at the end of the first quarter, putting the score at 3-0 with Centennial in the lead.
In the first drive of the second quarter the Hawks fired back with a 78-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Luke Anderson to junior Andrew Brandhorst.
The Hawk touchdown was soon followed by an interception for Ankeny by junior LaMarious Clark. This set up a 30-yard Hawk field goal by senior kicker Ryan Harrington with senior Carter Bailey on the hold.
Centennial added another touchdown in the second quarter to tie the score 10-10 at halftime.
The second half was marked by three touchdown runs from Centennial senior running back Braeden Jackson.
In the fourth quarter, Anderson completed a 35-yard pass to junior Owen Fischer. However, the Hawks were unable to convert the drive to a touchdown, making the final score 31-10.
Next on the schedule, the Hawks will take on the Southeast Polk Rams at Southeast Polk this Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
