Friday, October 6, the Ankeny Hawks hosted Cedar Rapids Prairie at Ankeny Stadium. The matchup ended in a decisive 35-16 victory for Ankeny. The game showcased an impressive night of play for the Ankeny defense, who forced a number of turnovers. This included three fumble recoveries and two interceptions.
Ankeny kicked off the game with a 52-yard touchdown drive finished with a 29-yard reception by senior Evan Irlmeier. Irlmeier completed the night with three total touchdown receptions for the Ankeny Hawks.
In the second quarter, Ankeny added 14 points to the scoreboard, including a 24-yard touchdown run by junior Daniel Larmie and a 15-yard pass to Irlmeier.
An 11-yard touchdown run by Cedar Rapids Prairie quarterback Wyatt Eash put Cedar Rapids on the scoreboard.
The Ankeny defense ended the first half with a forced turnover by senior Manning Allen, with senior Andrew Haase recovering the fumble. At the end of the first half, Ankeny led with a score of 21-7.
The second half was dominated by a strong show of defense for Ankeny. Junior LaMarious Clark intercepted a Prairie pass, which he returned for a 78-yard touchdown. The defense also recovered two fumbles from Prairie.
Cedar Rapids added a safety in the third quarter and a short touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. On Cedar Rapids Prairie’s final drive of the game, senior Mason Randolph came up with an interception for the Ankeny Hawks.
Friday’s victory put the Ankeny Hawks’ record at 3-3 as they head into this week’s game at Iowa City Liberty on October 11.
