Rapper, songwriter, producer extraordinaire JPEGMAFIA (Peggy) is back with a brand new album. He is continuously named as the boldest and most exciting voices in the rap underground scene.
In this record he continues his search to create the most creative and barrier breaking album to top his last lustrous record named “LP!” This record does not pale in comparison to his earlier work, in fact I believe he has surpassed the creative bar his last albums have set for him.
JPEGMAFIA’s 10th studio album “I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU” released on Aug. 1, 2024 starts with a menacing yet demanding first track, “i scream this in the mirror before i interact with anyone.” This opening song sets the tone for this latest JPEG album as he takes you through the way he views the world through a chaotic lens. This song is filled with everything a JPEG fan might expect in a usual JPEGMAFIA song as his quippy one liners and hard rock metal production serves the audience an amazing appetizer to prepare you for the rest of the album. Similar artists that take a route towards JPEG’s artistic style are Kanye West, Tyler the Creator, and BROCKHAMPTON. Lines like “if I was an NBA player I’d be Dillon Brooks but worse” perfectly showcases Peggy’s personality and how he compares himself to a league trash talker like Dillon Brooks.
As the album transitions to the next track “SIN MIEDO” the album’s lead single envelops rap fans into a head banging sound scape lead by the iconic JPEGMAFIA voice. The production on this track is so intricate and detailed you find yourself getting lost while listening to it yet having a sense of completeness because of how well all the different sounds work together.
As the album continues down the tracklist, I noticed a common theme in this album is how JPEG manages to throw unlikely sounds and references together and still have them cohesively flow through the album. Like on the track with longtime career collaborator Vince Staples called “New Black History (feat. Vince Staples)”, Peggy showcases his talent for balancing punchy drums and erratic synth pops to cohesively come together and tell the story of civil rights in america. This effect makes JPEG’s work stand out compared to others as his skill for creating unique and fresh sounding albums in this genre is second to none.
Things slow down a bit on the next track “I’ll Be Right There.” This dreamy yet soulful tune is a necessary slow jam for this album as we dive into Peggy’s introspective bars and lyrics that really make you stop and think. The track’s looping chorus helps reinforce the message that Peggy is trying to convey to us, that he will be right there for his loved one no matter what.
Scrolling further down the record, deep cuts like “JIHAD JOE,” “loop it and leave it,” and “i recovered from this” helps serve as the glue that holds this album together so beautifully. For example, in the track “i recovered from this,” Peggy confesses his sins and all his wrongdoings involving his ex while a siren-like woman’s vocals echo through the background chanting “funny how time flies when you’re having fun.” This chorus reflects on how Peggy feels about all the time he has lost due to his past relationship. He realizes that he must accept what he did in the past and move on by himself because no one is going to hold a silver spoon for you, you must take care of yourself to grow.
This album is mainly carried by grand spectacle songs like “JPEGULTRA! (feat. Denzel Curry),” “Exmilitary,” and “either on or off the drugs.” Specifically on the track “either on or off the drugs”, Peggy utilizes an AI sample of the Future song “Turn On The Lights” to flip that song’s chorus into a more soulful R&B approach. This dreamy chorus makes this track stand out with such musical catchiness that it is hard not to love. Don’t let the angelic background vocals distract you from the deep and dark meaning this song beholds. Peggy floats on and off the track’s production just rapping about his personal struggle with drugs. These lyrics tend to attach a sense of relatability towards Peggy’s young punk rebel fanbase who might be going through the same tribulations.
In “i lay down my life for you”, JPEGMAFIA reaffirms his position as a groundbreaking force in the rap landscape, pushing creative boundaries while maintaining a distinct personal touch. If I was asked to give this JPEGMAFIA album a number rating, it would score a solid nine out of 10.
The one possible skip “it’s dark and hell is hot,” holds the album back from receiving a 10 out of 10 from me. This does not take away from this masterful work JPEG was able to give to all the die hard fans, however. The album’s eclectic production and introspective lyrics invite listeners to explore both the chaos and beauty of his world, showcasing his unique ability to weave diverse sounds into a cohesive narrative. With this release, JPEGMAFIA not only surpasses the high bar set by his previous work but also solidifies his legacy as an artist unafraid to challenge conventions and explore the depths of his artistry.
