My name is Nolan McNulty.
My name is Blake Eichmeier.
And today, we’re gonna be talking about hip hop and all things rap. All things rap. Representing The Talon on the pod today.
1st and foremost, biggest news in hip hop of the week, probably of the year, in my opinion, Young Thug is free. Thugger is back home. He can’t go to Metro Atlanta, so he can’t actually go back home. However, He can make music with Gunna.
But he can make music with Gunna because he requested it specifically.
Specifically Gunna.
Yeah. Which, in my opinion, is an interesting choice. But to each their own, all that matters is that Thugger is home. He gained a few pounds, but yeah.
Do you think he, do you think in court he used Gunna’s legal name? Or do you think he just said, can I make music with Gunna?
I think he just said, can I make music with Gunna? I think he probably fizzled his lawyer.
His lawyer looked like a g.
His lawyer was a g, dude. His lawyer was. I mean, they were both swagged out in their suits and, like like, they’d be playing his music because the whole thing they were trying to get him for was lyrics.Yeah. It’s tough to ask. Him. Yeah. And whenever he’d be flowing in his own song, he’d be bopping along and his lawyer would just be smiling at him, dude.
In court?
In court. It was interesting. It was an interesting case. 15 years probation. Various, various things he cannot do. But Yeah. But, for the time being, all that matters is that he is home. Yep. And, I don’t know if they have that.
He, Drake and Future have already squashed their beef. Because, Young Thug made a tweet, like, it was like a month ago, I think. And, the day he gets released is when Drake and Future hop on a phone call and just stop, like, stop beefing with each other.
Damn. That was kinda crazy.
That just came out like an hour ago. Yep.
Really?
Yeah. Dude, Thug is… He’s influential.
He’s like he’s rebinding relationships. This guy’s insane. Yeah.
But in other news–
I heard not Metro, though. Metro’s dealing with his own stuff.
Metro’s dealing with- Metro still doesn’t like thu– *BLEEP*
Bad timing. But in other news, this the last 2 weeks and and the 2 weeks that are following have been insane for hip hop and are going to continue to be insane for hip hop with album releases and remixes of songs and all these different things. Most notably, Tyler the Creator.
Yep.
Released long awaited CHROMAKOPIA on Monday.
Lil Uzi Vert comes back to hip hop after Pink Tape with, Eternal Atake 2, sequel to his 2020 album.
Eternal Atake. Yep. Snoop Dogg released a single for his new album that will be dropping on December 13th titled Missionary [the single was] called, Gorgeous.
Gorgeous. I haven’t heard it yet.
Me neither. Expecting very good things.
Yep. It’s a sequel to his 1993 album, Doggystyle.
Yep.
Which Yeah. You get it.
Yeah, you get it. That’s– Yeah. Yeat dropped an album. Lyfestyle was his 2nd album of the year, I think.
Really? I think Oh, he dropped 2093 at the beginning of the year. That weird one that all Yeah. Everybody was watching.
Gambino had, like, background vocals on.
It was weird. Gambino had background vocals on a Yeat album? Dude, that made me lose a little bit of respect. That’s kind of unfortunate. But Lazer Dim 700. One of my favorite up and coming garbage soundcloud rappers. Yeah. Made an appearance on Yeat’s new album. His first official, feature or debut.
Yep. And, Laser was on, the new Denzel, single that dropped too.
Really?
Yeah.
Dude, he’s making moves, man.
If you guys haven’t heard of Lazer Dim 700, go check him out. See if you can find some of his clips on Instagram. He is… He’s a funny, funny guy.
It’s called, Denzel’s dropping a deluxe for his album he dropped this summer. It’s called King of the Mischievous South. The single he dropped for the deluxe is called Still in the Paint. It’s Denzel Laser Dim 700 and BK The Rula.
Oh. I’ve heard of BK The Rula.
It was pretty good. Pretty, pretty good. It was a good single. Yeah. Pretty, pretty good. The main news of today is that Freddie Gibbs dropped an album last night.
Me and Nolan are both big Freddie Gibbs fans.
Yep.
I feel like I put you on a little bit. But you’ve definitely listened to more of him than I have.
Yeah, I think Alfredo is definitely my favorite Freddie Gibbs album with Alchemist. And I’m pretty sure. Yeah. Probably Probably Bandana after that. Bandana.
I have to agree. I don’t know.
And then, probably in 3rd place, I’d say, Pinata.
I can respect that. Yeah.
I can respect that list. But this new album was a different direction than all three of those. Yeah. Those albums were all specific producer collabs, Pinata and Bandana, both being with Madlib Yep. And Alfredo being with the alchemist, as we mentioned.
Yep. This album was just a just a collection of songs. Solo. Yep. I think I didn’t look at any credits or anything, but I’m pretty sure he probably had just only 1 or 2 producers for it because so a lot of the beats were very, very similar.
Yeah. It was called You Only Die Once.
You only die once?
You only die once. It was a sequel to I think it was a 2018 album.
Yeah. It was in 2017. You only live twice. What were your thoughts?
My thoughts? I– Because I like The Alchemist and Madlib’s production so much
Mhmm.
I think Freddie does his best when he’s with them. Yeah. And those just, like, can’t be topped. I do think, however, when he’s not with them, his rapping itself shines through more. His rapping ability.
For sure.
And I think on this one, he took a different approach than he usually does when rapping. He’s usually very all up in your face, kinda switching up flows.
He kept it pretty, he kept it pretty mild. Yeah. It’s very chill beats. He’s not going crazy, necessarily. A few songs, he has his moments.
But, for the most part, it’s pretty laid back.
For sure.
That’s also a bit of a downfall, as you have mentioned.
Yep. I think the flows were very similar. A lot of them just have I think I said this earlier, how a lot of his flows are just like a line with a little inflection at the end to make it seem like an emphasis, but then the very next line also has that same emphasis. And a lot of like, if that was just on one song, I don’t think that would’ve been a big deal. It would’ve been cool. But, like Or if he could intertwine it between different parts of songs. But it basically becomes the whole album.
The whole album just seems like a continuous flow. Every every beat, while they’re unique in their own ways, they all they have so many similarities that you that when you’re listening to it and not paying attention to the songs, they all kinda flow together. Yeah. So I didn’t think it was bad necessarily. I just thought there’s not nothing nothing too outstanding about it.
Yeah. But that’s not necessarily bad. Yeah. The album cover, I gotta say, that’s pretty cool. That is pretty cool.
It’s like Freddie fighting a bunch of zombies. And the 2017 one, in my opinion, is extra cool. Because that’s Freddie as Jesus.
Jesus. He can’t remember.
That’s fire. And the first track on that one is, called 20 Karat Jesus. So, that one’s a good one.
He’s got some good track names, man.
Yeah.
Freddie Gibbs in front of some, police and some dancers.
Oh, my God. Yeah.
Yeah. It’s some sort of painting.
Some little renaissance painting that he remade with himself. Yeah. And then this one is just Freddie Gibbs. I’m pretty sure the thing is that he’s in hell and he’s fighting these zombies. Oh, I see.
That’s probably why it’s, like, green and stuff. Right? Yeah. Well, because the description on Apple Music says, aside from a few stray comedy bits involving the devil, there’s nothing terribly frightening about Freddie Gibbs’ Halloween 2024 drop, You Only Die Once.
I have Spotify, I didn’t know Apple Music does all that.
Yeah no Apple Music gives you a whole essay about an album.
It, like, Spotify, like, lets me know when one’s dropping. That’s about it, really.
Yeah. So I could play a little snippet of my favorite song on the album. It was called Yeah Yeah.
I’m not not remembering that one specifically.
I’ll play a little part of it.
My favorite was probably Status, the first song.
Okay yeah.
*Snippet of “Yeah Yeah” by Freddie Gibbs is played*
Yeah. It’s very, like I feel like the beats on this one are good because they’re very, like, luxurious. They’re not very, like, hard heading. His because because that’s what yes. And that they and that’s kinda what I was getting at earlier where it’s like, he’s he’s much more laid back with this.
He’s not as being in your face with the beats and with just his delivery. It’s very more like like put together and chill Yeah. Than most of his other beats, especially when he works with Madlib. Yeah. The Alchemist, it’s a bit more chill also because the Alchemist doesn’t use drums as much in his beats.
Right. But Madlib uses drums to the max. And since his beats are so grainy and raw as his samples from vinyl Yep. Like, it just I think that’s Freddie at his best. Yeah.
Because because he’s he’s delivering and the beats fit the delivery that he’s giving, which is just hard. Yeah. I’m thinking, like, Scarface, the intro for pinata, where it’s just him just absolutely going at it. This is so different. Villainous beat.
Play Scarface real quick. Because Scar Scarface is a good ex is is a good comparison. It’s a good Yeah. It’s a good comparison for this album. Yeah.
Because, like, you’ll hear it and compared to what we played from that snippet It’s so different. It’s so different. You’re gonna have to skip ahead a little bit because I don’t think he starts rapping for a wee bit.
This is so many different versions of this album.
As far as I know, this is all freestyle, by the way. Yeah. Because, yeah, he usually does that 2nd song in his album is usually a freestyle. Yep. No matter when he drops. And this is a freestyle for the ages, dude.
This is the intro to, Pinata by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib. 2014.
*Snippet of “Scarface” by Freddie Gibbs and Madlib played*
That is a lot different than what came out last night. It just just love it so much. They’re both great in their own, like, ways.
They’re both great in their own ways. And it shows that he’s very versatile, which a lot of people question because a lot of his It’s just like Trap, almost. It’s it’s almost like Trap in that he’s very similar. He doesn’t change up style a lot, necessarily. And with a deep voice like that, it’s kinda hard to.
Like, you don’t see like I guess Playboi Carti’s not a good example, but like Loomis is his ideal girl voice too. Well, because he does the deep voice now too. It’s like, I was gonna use him as an example of you can only do high voice, but I guess that’s not true.
But, onto Uzi. Eternal Atake 2.
I did not listen yet. So I have opinions. One song and it featured You probably don’t You remember, it was an old Nickelodeon show, Big Time Rush.
Oh, yeah. I remember Big Time Rush.
It was too early on. Uzi has a feature from Big Time Rush on his album, which I don’t think should be considered as a feature because it’s a 5 second spoken intro.
Oh, but, I mean, still, if you got Big Time Rush on a song, you gotta mention it.
Yeah. That’s a good– it was good marketing.
Very good marketing.
But most of the flows in the lyrics, I didn’t really like from the song I listened to. So I don’t think I’m gonna pick up the rest of the album, especially because I’ve seen people telling Uzi to retire because of this one. So And I’ve heard a lot of the same that it’s like he just doesn’t necessarily deliver on a lot of songs. And the songs that are good just aren’t that
Yeah just aren’t that good.
Right. Future. I’ll let you talk about this next topic. Well, I think we’ll speak in the future because Future only released a remix.
Yeah. I had to listen to it. What are your thoughts, Nolan?
It had Travis Scott. It was from it was a remix of a song from Future’s newest mixtape, which I reviewed.
Check it out. AHSTalonNews.com
Self plug is insane. Okay. So check out my Chromacopia review while you’re at it.
I released it, like, more recently and it’s cool. The remix is called South of France and it was a good song, but, like, it wasn’t, like, monumental, like another Travis Scott and Future song. Like, telekinesis is on a completely different level, I think. Not even a big up to that. I’m not even a big Travis fan like that and I love telekinesis.
Yeah. So But, onto Kanye documentary. Yeah. Yeah. So, I’m a very big Kanye fan.
And, the news came out this morning that a documentary about, the life of Kanye West. It’s called In Whose Name. And, Produced by him, also. Yeah. There’s one other guy with him.
One other guy. That filmed it on his iPhone. Reported it. Really? On his iPhone.
Interesting. Interesting. Interesting. I mentioned produced by him because he had another documentary come out on Netflix. Jeen-yuhs.
Yeah. Which I watched, by the way. Very, very good. Yeah. Very, very good.
But it looks more into just like his up like his like coming into music and his later career a little bit. This one’s more just about is that the cover? That’s the cover. Yeah. Oh my god.
That’s like the teaser image. It’s just Kanye’s silhouette standing in front of the sun. Like a enclosed, like, Science Center picture. It’s like It’s cool. And, Kanye has to say, that documentary was very deep.
It was like being dead and looking back on my life. That’s what he said to, Richard Which how much nitrous he’s been huffing recently is very, very good to hear that he can speak coherently. Right. Yeah. And say something that makes sense.
The synopsis is, “With a $1,000,000,000 budget and a commitment to truth, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, invites 18 year old Nicholas, I don’t wanna butcher his name, Ballesteros, armed with an iPhone, on a 6 year journey revealing unfiltered aspects of celebrity life, which confront the provocative opinions, grand visions, and bold contrarianism that defined him in this description. Yeah. That defined him as the world’s most controversial artist. This film follows Ye’s ascent to becoming the richest black man in American history while uncovering why the, superstar risked everything he had built in the name of freedom, examining culture that birthed the star in whose name explores, the overlapping influences of corporate exploitation, racial complexities, and psychological struggles inherent in the American dream.” That’s the description.
And the rumors are it’s coming to theaters. If it comes to theaters, I’m there day 1.
And I’m dude, I’m not even I’ve hopped off the Kanye train a little bit, but I’ll be there with you. That synopsis is insane. The last 6 years of Kanye’s life.
So basically from an 18 year old with an iPhone. Yeah. Basically everything post Life of Pablo. So that’s like Wyoming Ranch, like that era when he made–
Oh my god. I forgot about Wyoming Ranch.
Where he just had he just lived on a ranch in Wyoming and he had dune buggies and this big island. Yeah. He produced four, in 1 year, he produced Ye the album, KIDS SEE GHOST, DAYTONA by Pusha T.
He produced it then? Yeah. And then I know that. I believe the album’s called Nasir by Nas. He produced all 4 of those.
Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. All 4 of those in 1 year. From the farm.
From the farm. Yeah. 2 of them were his and Kids See Ghosts. Kids See Ghosts.
We hate Anthony Fantano, but Kids See Ghosts. Anthony Fantano gave it a 10 out of 10. He has like 8 10 out of tens in his entire millions of albums that he’s reviewed. Yeah. That’s such a, it’s just such a nice era. And like, then going from like the Wyoming era to like Tanks tanks.
Yeah. Go I don’t know. Wyoming era. Don- Donda era was, I mean That was cool. Like the Mercedes Benz stadium?
Yes. It was very cool. But that’s where he started it. That’s where the the mental illness started to kick in. Illness kicked in.
That’s where the bipolar was diagnosed. Yeah. And then we got the scary voltage actress era. Yeah. After the divorce.
After the divorce. Shout out Pete Davidson. Yeah. Oh. It’ll be I think it’s actually gonna be interesting.
Just to see, like because Jeen-yuhs was more of like Kanye’s uprising. And this is gonna be more of like His almost his downfall.
Yeah. Almost his downfall. But and and I think the way that he described it, it’s like watching you it’s like watching what did he say?
Like watching himself, like, die again? Yeah. Something like that. That’s just like Like highlights of his life. He’s an interesting guy.
Whether you like him or not, he’s an interesting He is. You could study that man and his brain for his years. You could make a college major out of him. It’s insane. But I’m very excited for that as well.
You put me on. And you said billion with a “B” for the budget?
That’s what they say. I don’t think that’s true. I don’t think that’s really there.
Especially since you mentioned iPhone now. Right. Yeah. Avengers End Game didn’t have a $1,000,000,000 budget, I don’t think. And, Avengers End Game was Avengers End Game.
That was one of the highest grossing movies of all time. Let’s see. Budget for Avengers End Game. I’m sure it’s still pretty expensive. It’s around around 300,000,000 around 300 to $400,000,000.
So not even half a 1,000,000,000. Yeah. Exactly. And so they’re saying Kanye documentary is gonna have a 1,000,000,000. I don’t believe it.
I don’t believe it either. But we are running out of a little bit of time. So we should mention, I don’t really know what else. Westside Gunn dropping an album to he dropped an album last night. Is dropping another one tonight?
Another one tonight. Supposed to be. But since he was on schedule with the first, I mean, he’s a he’s an artist that’s kinda all over the place. And he said he was done last year after he dropped And Then I Pray For You, his sequel to Pray For Paris, which I love. Yeah.
Go listen to it Pray For Paris 2020 by Westside Gunn. But I haven’t listened to that one last night or this or this one that comes out tonight. And I probably won’t for a little bit because I wanna listen to them together.
Yep.
I feel like there’s supposed to be one project. And I’m very interested in the cover art. He’s always got interesting cover art, but this is it’s different. Usually, he goes for more, like, Pray For Paris and then I Pray For You. Those 2 albums are both renaissance paintings that he’s put his own little spark on. So, like, giving people chains and, like, putting his own face and stuff. But then this one is literally just like a this one is just a, like, freeze frame on TV of a WWE match. So That’s fine.
It’s cool.
And considering that it kinda little bit shocker came out of nowhere. He only announced like 2 weeks ago Yeah. That these things are coming out. I’m Yep.
I’m excited. Yeah. I’m excited. It’ll be cool. It’ll be cool.
And I haven’t heard of any new Griselda in a while. And Griselda’s a record label that I love for what they do.
Yeah. So Alright–
Well, I think that’s where we’re gonna wrap things up for today. That’s all. Episode 1 is done. We will have a title for the pod next time.
Yep.
We couldn’t think of it and Chat GPT wasn’t helping us either. So if it’s not out, if there’s no title by the time this one’s out, it’ll be Untitled 1 by Blake Eichmeier and Nolan McNulty.
But thank you for listening and have a hawksome rest of your day.
No that’s so dumb. Fine.
