Name is Nolan.
My name is Blake.
And welcome back to Now Playing… We finally have a name.
Shout out ChatGPT.
Shouldn’t be using it for your classes, but, you know, for figuring out titles for the podcast is pretty good. Little different. It’s a little It’s a little different. How are we doing, Nolan? How are we doing?
Good. Good. I’m doing good. How are you doing?
That’s good. That’s good. Pretty good, man. Pretty good. Pretty good.
Today, we have quite a few things to talk about.
Quite a few things. Not as many as last time, not as many drops necessarily, but the little little minor things have happened and they’ve been interesting in the music world recently.
Yep. Main thing we’re gonna talk about today is, Denzel Curry. He dropped a deluxe to his album he dropped this summer.
It’s called King of the Mischevious South.
Mhmm. Dropped 5 new songs. Right?
Yep.
On it?
Mhmm. 5. Lots of weird features on there. Very.
I haven’t heard of, like, half of them. And it’s because I don’t remember where he is he from Florida? I’m pretty sure he’s from Florida.
I don’t know. The features on this album were, like, all over the place.
Because I know for sure A$AP Rocky was on there. So you got a mainstream guy. Then you have, A$AP Ferg was on there too on a different song. Then you have That Mexican OT. He is he is on the XXL freshman list for this year.
He was?
Yeah.
I mean, he deserves that.
2 Chainz.
2 Chainz. But then, like, also you got, like, Duke Deuce, I saw was one of them.
Yeah. Like Kenny Mason, Project Pat.
Project Pat. Yes. He was on the song. Good song. What song was he on?
SKED? SKED. That was like Oh, SKED was hard, dude. SKED was hard.
And then Ty Dolla $ign and Juicy J were on there too.
Were they on the same song?
Yeah.
Do you know who Juicy J is?
Yeah I do. I know he’s on Wasted by Travis Scott.
Yeah. But he was he was, when 3 6 Mafia was first a thing. Yeah. Juicy J and, god. I can’t remember the other guy. But it was it was the 2 guys, and they were basically the start of the entire 36 Mafia, which was, like, half of Memphis basically by the end of it.
There’s also a guy named Slim Guerilla featured on it. I’ve never heard of him before.
And also Let’s look up a picture of a Slim Guerilla.
PlayThatBoiZay. He’s pretty good. He’s been on he’s been on a lot of stuff. Yeah.
He was on one song on ZUU that–
Oh, yeah, he was on ZUU. He was on the outro to ZUU. Yeah.
He was. He was.
He was. Yep.
I still have sorry–.
It’s okay.
I had Z-Pain playing. Do you wanna talk about Z-Pain real quick just before anything else? I think this is very, very funny. We’ll get back into the Denzel thing in a second. But, T-Pain teamed up with, none other than Mark Zuckerberg, the Zuck himself.
The Zuck himself. Meta CEO. Multi-billionaire Mark Zuckerberg to make a song.
And out of every song that they could have made, they made a countryfied Remix. Remix acoustic version of Get Low by Lil Jon.
That’s so crazy.
If you are not familiar with Get Low by Lil Jon, I’m sure you are. Go and listen to it. Yeah. And then go and listen to the Z-Pain version. That’s so of your world rocked. It is insane. It’s like it’s not like you’re listening to it. And I was like, is this, like, real? Like, is this happening? The name itself is what got me.
Z-Pain. I was like, I saw that, and I was like, there’s no way this is real. Right? Z-Pain is not the thing. And then my second thought was, like, maybe, I don’t know, it’s AI-generated Zuckerberg or something that they got going on this, but now it’s just It’s the real Zuck.
It is the real Zuck. And, like, he does most of the work too. The only instrument’s a a guitar and he’s playing it.
Really?
Yeah.
T-Pain just comes in for the chorus because he’s on the chorus in the original song.
Wow. I didn’t I didn’t listen to the song, but that’s just so crazy.
Get Low by Mark Zuckerberg.
I never thought I would hear Mark Zuckerberg’s name on anything that wasn’t, like, Facebook.
Exactly. And associated with T-Pain of all people. And we’re making Get Low, which is from, like, 06 or something. It’s just– yeah. Out of no where, man.
Mark Zuckerberg debut album, 2028.
No. 2025. We need that next year. No. We need the Z-Pain album. We can’t just have we I like, just the Zuck would make me upset. Yeah. That would be that would be kinda crazy. I can’t even bring in Zuckerberg on the album.Who could Mark Zuckerberg bring in? We could get a He could just bring anybody.
Elon Musk. That would be horrible. That would be horrible, but I would still listen.
Were they trying to fight at one point, like, UFC?
Oh, yeah. I forgot. Yeah. Elon Musk kept being, like, Mark Zuckerberg should fight me.
And then I’ve seen Mark or pictures of Zuck, and he’s, like, I don’t think Elon Musk would stand a chance against Zuck. Zuck trains jiu-jitsu too.
Yeah.
And he’s, like, low key, like, jacked. Elon’s, like, he’s been, like, melted ice cream.
Elon’s running the Department of Government Efficiency, which I think Trump just made so that Elon could stop crying about something called DOGE. I saw that this morning in Cano’s, and it was another thing I didn’t think was real.
Yeah.
It’s been a crazy world recently, man. Yeah.
It has been really crazy since our last episode. It has. Yeah. A lot a lot has happened if you haven’t been keeping up in the; In the world. In the world.
Yeah. Anyways, we were supposed to talk about Denzel. Back to Denzel.
My favorite track on the whole album itself is called HOODLUMZ. That was the one with PlayThatBoiZay and Rocky.
Was that a single? I can’t remember what the single was. That was I thought so.
Yeah. And then my favorite on the deluxe was called ACT A DAMN FOOL by, Denzel, and then it featured Duke Deuce and Slim Guerilla.
Slim Guerilla. It’s spelled like guerilla, like, guerilla warfare too. So that’s interesting. I forgot Kingpin Skinny Pimp.
Yeah.
A personal favorite of mine was on another song. Can I say that?
DJ Drama of of this album. He does, like, the narration.
Oh, for real? Is he on all the interludes then?
I think he’s on all the interludes yeah. I don’t think he has, like, the vocals on all of them, but he’s credited on all of them.
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Because he’s yeah. Because it’s with Kingpin Skinny Pimp. Yeah.
And yeah. Yeah. I can play a bit, so this doesn’t have words, so I can play this part. Last episode, we had to cut out a few of this, songs we played because they featured swears, which we can’t do on here. But I’m gonna play an interlude that doesn’t have words. And the transition I just want you to listen to this transition.
Which interlude is this? I don’t know if I remember that.
Lunatic interlude into SKED.
Oh, okay.
Okay. This sked is good too. Really good. Okay. So I’m gonna play this.
K. Oh, no. I actually had it in shuffle. Oopsies. It’s a boopsies.
Let me try that again. Hold on. Hold on. This is the power of editing. Technical difficulties.
Technical difficulties. Alright. Here we go. Take 2.
Oh, baby. That’s good. The way that Denzel does, like, those evil bass lines
Yeah.
Because he does them all on, like, a lot of Yeah. Other songs on have you heard ZUU? I have His album the one I don’t have it, like, memorized, but Oh, we need it.
Because I didn’t like a lot of it because most of it is just kinda, and it’s really short.
Oh my god. There was one song I just relistened the other day. It’s called I think it’s called Birds, and it has Rick Roth on it. Yeah.
I know. That’s like I remember that. I was listening to it on shuffle. It was on my playlist, and then I just hear the: Maybach music.
Yeah.
And then he comes out of nowhere. Yeah. That’s he comes out of nowhere. Yeah.
Yeah. Because Denzel, like, stops and it’s just like, M-m-m-maybach Music. And then it’s like, you need the dictionary when you write 2 apps. Comes out of nowhere.
Rick Ross features are crazy.
Rick Ross is a guy. He is a character.
He he even joined in on the Drake disses earlier this year. Yeah. He dropped one, and I don’t remember what it was. I don’t remember what it was called, but I remember the thumbnail or the cover art for it was a picture it was an AI picture of Drake with a nose job. Like, it was just Drake with a giant nose. It was so weird. And then I remember he took it down. I think he took it down.
His team probably told him to. Like, Rick, what are you doing there? We don’t even know what’s going on. Yeah. I listened to the Westside Gunn album we talked about last week.
Yeah. I finally got a little bit. It was it wasn’t a double drop like he said or it was.
It was an EP.
It was. Yeah. Because he dropped an EP. I did not listen to the EP. I heard it was really good, from Ryan, but I don’t know how much I trust Ryan with that. So Yeah.
We’ll see. But I listened to the full album with the DJ Drama version because I love DJ Drama.
Okay.
I thought it was very, very good. Yeah. I liked it.
Okay.
It felt like a little Griselda to get, like, get back together. You know what I mean?
Yeah.
Because Yeah. It the the beats on it were very, like, still praying. Yeah. Exactly. Well, that was the name of the album. It was very, like, pray for Paris. It was very, like, pray for Paris. It was very, like, just yeah. It it it didn’t, like It didn’t stray away. It didn’t stray away from that.
And I thought that was nice, though. Yeah. I thought that was nice. And because then you got DJ Drama who did, And Then You Pray For Me. Yeah.
He did the same thing that he did on this new album, on that album. It just felt, like, very Griselda, and I really liked it. DJ Drama has been, like, bumping recently.
He was on he’s been on a few things in the last few years. That can name. He was on, well, he was on The Estate or Call Me If You Get Lost. He was on D-Day, which is, J. Cole’s album. Oh, not J. Cole’s label. Or J. Cole’s label, Dreamville. It was their, like, collab album. DJ Drama did that. DJ Drama also was on Insano by Kid Cudi at the beginning of this year.
Really?
Yeah.
I didn’t listen to Insano by Kid Cudi because—
It was not it wasn’t good.
Well, I didn’t figure so.
I mean, I’ve followed Kid Cudi on this for a few months. And then as it went on, I just it didn’t age very well. A lot of the songs sounded, like, mental, almost like–
\Was that was that the one with the weird cover? Like, it was, like, just like the shapes and colors and stuff.
Yeah.
I remember that one because I remember you were trying to, like, pedal it to me. I was like, dude, no. Just saying it.
There’s one song I still go back to, and it was, it’s called WOW. The only reason I go back is because I like the A$AP Rocky verse.
I mean, that’s valid, though. There’s a lot of songs that are like that.
I still need ASAP Rocky to drop Don’t Be Dumb.
Dude, he’s he’s not going to. That’s what’s I think the thing here is Don’t Be Dumb, I’m not dropping.
I– that might be it, dude. Because he keeps he keeps teasing it too. And, like, I agree. I remember there was an interview this year where they asked him, like, like, the 3, like, the 3 things you’re most proud of.
Yeah. And he said, well, it’d have to be my 2 kids Yeah. And his newest newest album I have dropping.
Yeah. I saw was a clip from a few weeks ago. And he was, he was doing something for press. And so he was just walking paparazzi or following him. Someone someone yells, Rocky, when are you dropping Don’t Be Dumb? And he goes, ASAP. And then just walks away. And it’s been weeks.
Dude, I feel like Rocky’s take he’s taking, like, more of the Tyler, Frank approach.
Yeah.
Of just literally completely getting away from music. Because he’s big in, like, fashion and stuff. Like, have you seen him drop?
Don’t know why. Because he dropped 3 singles from, like, August talk, till mean?
Is that like, I feel like it’s done. I feel like he just doesn’t want to drop it. It’s weird.
Yeah. They didn’t do very well on, like, the charts. Because the J. Cole one was really good, though. Ruby Rosary.
Yeah. See, like, I don’t even remember that one. I remember Tailor Swif.
Yeah. That was good. The music video was cool for that one too.
Dude, that like, that’s up for, music video of the year at the Grammys because that was so weird. It was so weird, but it was awesome.
Yeah.
No. He’s got he’s got really cool style. Yeah. I love A$AP’s style. I just think I just wish he’d put it more into music than modeling for Bottega and stuff like that.
Yeah. But Yeah. Because he said it’s, Don’t Be Dumb is theoretically, I guess, gonna be more, experimental.
Yeah. And, like, more of like a personal album, probably.
Yeah. And Testing was, like, all over the place. Mhmm. Because you have, like, Praise Tha Lord, but you also have stuff like hold on. There’s one song I’m thinking. What was the outro one? It had Frank Ocean on it. I don’t remember. I haven’t I remember when I listened to Testing once. I like Testing as an album.
And I and I like it. I just don’t remember it super well.
Purity.
Yes. Purity with Frank Ocean.
Yeah. And, there’s another song that I forgot what it’s called. F Sleep is also different than 2 of those 2.
Mhmm.
There’s 1, CALLDROPS featuring Kodak. I did not like that one because it’s a really weird verse. And then the Kodak feature, that was when he was in jail. It was literally a phone in call. You can hear, like, the press 1 to speak to your inmate. And then Kodak is just like, yo, get me out, guys. Something like that. I didn’t like that one. But most of it It’s like–
Not free Kodak, bro. You can keep him in.
He’s out now.
I mean, he’s out now. Well, I remember when he I I found out he was out, because the video came out when he was leaving the jail, and, like, the press was out there. And he’s covering his face with, like, a thing of money. And I’m like, oh my god. That’s Kodak.
It was last, like, December, I think. He just randomly showed up at the Kanye concert when he was previewing Vultures. Kodak was just on stage doing, like, gang signs and smoking. I was like, when did you get out?
When did they release? Kodak’s a funny guy, though. Have you seen his fit pics are some of the funniest thing? He because he he matches with everything. He’s always got something to match with. There’s a picture of him in, like, an all, like, like, fluorescent green almost. Like, it’s so bright and, like, artificial like, his whole fit is that color down to the shoes. Okay. And then he’s standing next to a toilet with toilet cleaner in it that’s, like, the same color, and that’s, like, the fit. And he’s sipping lean, like, the whole time.
It’s just so he’s so goofy. Yeah. He’s so goofy. Classic Atlanta. Yeah.
That’s Actually, I don’t know if he’s from Atlanta. I don’t remember where Kodak was. I think he’s he might be Florida. Yeah. He seems Florida.
Because, Denzel’s also from Florida. Okay.
But, yeah, Denzel, he dropped. I like his album. It’s in my top five of the year.
Oh, yeah. I’d definitely say so. Because it was, like, it was kinda the same with the Freddie one where it, like, wasn’t outstanding, but it was more solid throughout. And there’s a bit more variety also. Because there’s some songs where it just, like, kicks you in the nuts out of nowhere, and it’s just like loud and in your face.
And then there are some well, like, just there’s a lot of, like, psycho energy songs that are good. Like, SKED is also really high energy. Same thing with, like, HOODLUMZ. Because he just does high energy music. Yeah.
Like, he is like, that I think that’s what where Denzel shines. Yeah. He was born in Florida, Kodak was.
Okay.
I think that’s where Denzel shines.
Yeah. Is just, like, energy, being able to deliver that energy. Yeah. I think we should do a whole episode of this at the end of the year. But currently, my top five albums are We Don’t Trust You by Metro and Future, King of the Mischievous South by Denzel, I Lay Down My Life For You by JPEGMAFIA, CHROMAKOPIA, and then Blue Lips by ScHoolboy Q. No Kanye in there.
Me and Nolan have some very not very. We both we both like the rap. We both like the hip hop. But Yeah. I venture out a little bit more. I had some I would have to really scroll through my library to find, like, 5 from this year. But ones that I would like to point out are CHROMAKOPIA, obviously. And go read my review, by the way. It was really good and I want a SNO award. But, I want a SNO award. I didn’t win one. I’m not I’m not good like that.
But Shout out Julius.
No. Don’t shout out Julius. He doesn’t need more traction on that thing, dude. It’s gotten like 10,000,000 views. Charm by Clairo.
Okay.
Clairo that came out this year. I love Clairo. I love feeling like a little sad girl. It’s my favorite thing in the world.
Okay.
Very random band, I think. I don’t know if it’s their debut album, like, studio album. Mhmm. No. It’s not. But it’s they haven’t come out with an album in 2 years. A band called Cruiser that I found
Okay.
On Spotify. They have, like, a little bit less than 1000000 monthly listeners, but they came out with an album called Cruzified. Okay. I can’t really put a, like, a genre on it.
Yeah.
It’s a little mix of everything, but really, really good. I really liked it.
Okay.
I usually determine, like, a really good song is if I, like, downloaded it. Like, I put it on my special playlist with my downloaded songs, and I downloaded, like, 3 off of this album. I thought it was really good. I’m trying to think of what else came out this year.
I also wanna give a shout out to Dark Times by Vince Staples. That was a really good album. Have you listened to that?
No. Wait. When did you did you like, is it this year?
Yeah.
It was? What?
It was, I wanna say, like, closer to summer, but, like, maybe May.
I did not know that he dropped. I– wow.
Really good album.
Is it really good? Okay.
It’s really good.
Okay. Okay. I’m gonna add that right now because I haven’t listened to Vince in a minute. But, yeah. I just I can’t think of much else from this year.
Okay.
I listened to. Yeah.
I think we should make a whole episode about this.
Mhmm. Oh, yeah.
Because I could I could definitely get a list where I can mail it out for.
I think we should take, viewer suggestions.
Oh, yeah. Also, to, like yeah. If anyone wants us to talk about any albums, movies or listen to an album yet. Or even listen. We’re we’re gonna start branching out, I think. I think we can do a lot with this. Yeah. I think we should talk, like yeah.
Mhmm. Yeah. Remember, Nolan when suggesting albums, Nolan’s much more current. Yeah. And, I mean–
Mainstream.
Yes. And it’s and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
However, I’m not getting at that, but, like, I like to venture out a little bit more when I listen to my music. Yeah. I’m more about the exploration part of it.
Yeah.
But I will listen to just about anything because I’ve listened to some really good and I’ve listened to some really bad and I’ve listened to a lot of weird stuff. That’s for sure.
Yep.
So yeah.
But I think we gotta wrap it up here.
Gotta wrap it up. Alrighty. Well, everybody have a hawksome rest of your day.
And thank you for listening to Now Playing…
